Animal Testing

Based on the discussions held in the previous lesson write the script of a conversation between an animal rights activist and a lab scientist involved in animal testing.

Begin as follows:
Activist: Animal testing is just wrong. It’s unbelievable you could do something like this!
Lab scientist: Why not?

Word limit: 2 sides (350 words)
Use the arguments and counterarguments we discussed in class.

Activist: Animal testing is just wrong. It’s unbelievable you could do something like this!

Lab scientist: Why not?

Activist: It’s not a question of why yes or why not, we simply cannot and do not have the right to use animals. We use them as tools for our own greedy, selfish “research”.

Lab scientist: Animal testing isn’t only for pure research, it’s also for drug testing and cosmetics. You yourself have probably used the items that are made from these animals so how can you tell me it’s wrong, you should be thanking me.

Activist: Yes but the numbers of animals used in these tests are ridiculous.

Lab scientist: In the past twenty years, the numbers of animals used has cut in half due to us finding alternatives. We are trying, that’s the point but for scientific use these alternatives aren’t exactly what we need.

Activist: Nonetheless, many are tortured and undercover investigations have proven this fact. We would never dare to use humans as test subjects.

Lab scientist: Then the companies that are torturing these animals should be brought to justice not the complete industry being pulled to a stop because of the few who do these inhumane things. If they are “tortured” for scientific research and not disgusting pleasure, we use animals instead because it is scientifically proven that these animals suffer less due to their incapability to remember and anticipate pain so it really isn’t as bad as you make it sound.

Activist: Ok but just as it is unethical for us to use humans as test subjects then it is also unethical for us to use animals. They have lives and should be allowed freedom. What makes us better than animals? Simply because we have more power or have the ability to voice our opinions? It is because they are vulnerable that we should protect them and not use them.

Lab scientist: It all boils down to this- would you use humans, possibly even your family or friends, as test subjects rather than animals? It would also be unethical of us to release drugs to the public without properly testing them and knowing the effects. We don’t use many animals either, only ten per cent of all biomedical research includes animals. Also, more animals die from being put to sleep and from pest control than the research, why is it that what we do is so wrong but theirs isn’t?

Activist: Then it is simple; we need to change the system if we are not to stop it. We need to replace more of the animal testing with alternatives, reduce the unnecessary amount of animals used and refine or perfect this system.
